Audit Figures on IRS 33 Districts

What Is Available and Where to Find It on this Site

Audit figures for each of IRS's 33 districts only include audits conducted by each district office. This is because these are the only data IRS maintains. While audits conducted by IRS service centers now make up a substantial proportion of total audits (see breakdown), IRS does not track which districts are covered by service center examinations. One can only compare these audits for each of the ten IRS Service Centers.

Most service center audits target low income taxpayers. Thus, the omission of service center audits from district totals -- because of the limitation in IRS data systems -- means that it is not possible to examine how the overall audit odds for low income versus high income taxpayers vary in individual districts. It is only possible to examine such figures at the national level.
